The Bora Bora Honeymoon, Beautifully Planned

There is a moment, usually on the boat from the airport, when Bora Bora comes into full view: Mount Otemanu rising from a lagoon in every shade of blue, and the overwater villas waiting on the horizon. It is the moment couples tell me they will never forget.

French Polynesia is my signature destination, and it is where I most love to send newlyweds. A honeymoon here is not simply booked; it is composed. The islands, seasons and pacing live on my French Polynesia page. This guide is about something harder to put in a grid: what makes the days, and especially the evenings, unforgettable.

The villa feeling

This is where the magic lives. An overwater villa is not simply a room; it is the setting for the whole honeymoon, so the choices that shape it matter.

  • The view: Mount Otemanu is the postcard. Lagoon and sunset views offer a quieter, more intimate kind of beauty, and some couples prefer them.

  • Privacy: nothing but water around you feels wonderfully secluded.

  • A private plunge pool: a true indulgence, especially in the warmer months.

  • Glass-floor viewing panels: watching tropical fish glide beneath you never grows old.

  • Life on a motu: most luxury resorts sit on their own small islet, reached by boat. The seclusion is the point.

You can see the villa I stayed in myself at the St. Regis, glass floors, canopy bed and all, on my French Polynesia page. Among the other resorts I love are the Four Seasons, Conrad Bora Bora Nui and the InterContinentals. The right villa is the difference between a lovely stay and an unforgettable one.

The signature evening

If I could give every honeymoon couple one experience, it would be this. You set sail across the lagoon as the light turns gold behind Mount Otemanu, then step ashore on a private motu where a candlelit dinner waits on the sand.

For couples who love the water, the afternoon can begin beneath the surface: a snorkel among coral gardens, or a guided dive, before you dry off and watch the sun go down. It is the evening that turns a beautiful trip into the story you tell for years.

Moments that make a honeymoon

The grand gestures are wonderful, but it is often the small, unhurried touches couples remember most.

  • Breakfast by outrigger canoe: at many resorts, breakfast arrives at your villa by traditional canoe.

  • A couples spa ritual: Polynesian massage with monoi oil, side by side.

  • Champagne in the villa: an arrival toast, with the lagoon as the backdrop.

  • Bora Bora from above: a helicopter flight over the island's famous ring of blue.

  • Humpback season: from roughly June to late October, whales pass through the islands, a gift for couples who travel in the dry season.

Romance or adventure? Choosing your honeymoon's rhythm

Every couple falls somewhere between "we want to do nothing at all" and "we want to see everything." Neither is wrong; the art is in the balance.

  • Pure romance: Bora Bora is iconic, serene and effortlessly luxurious. Couples who want stillness often spend most of their nights here, letting the villa and the lagoon set the pace.

  • Adventure first, romance to close: Moorea is lush, dramatic and unhurried, with mountain lookouts and Cook's and 'Opunohu bays. Starting there and ending in Bora Bora gives the honeymoon a beautiful arc.

  • Beneath the surface: gentle stingrays, blacktip reef sharks and manta rays at Anau. I have dived with Bora Bora's mantas myself, and as a dive-trip planner I arrange everything from a first discover-scuba session to advanced dives.

  • A third chapter: Taha'a, the vanilla island, or Rangiroa, with its legendary diving, for couples with more time.

Questions worth asking

  • Is the view or the privacy more important to us in a villa?

  • How many evenings do we want planned, and how many left completely open?

  • Does one of us dream of diving while the other would rather snorkel or stay ashore?

  • Are we celebrating something beyond the honeymoon, like a milestone anniversary or a vow renewal, that deserves its own moment?
