National Geographic Expeditions: Exploring the World with the Experts
There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a small group when an expert begins to speak: a researcher explaining how a pride of lions is tracked, a photographer showing you how the light will change over a ruin in the next ten minutes. In that moment a destination stops being scenery and becomes a story you understand.
That is the promise of National Geographic Expeditions, and it is why I place it among my luxury specialties. The headline destinations, from the Galápagos to Antarctica and Alaska, are on my National Geographic page. Here I want to share what's changed, how the styles differ, and how to tell which expedition is yours.
A legendary name, and how it travels today
National Geographic Expeditions has been taking travelers into the field since 1999. It is part of National Geographic Partners, majority-owned by Disney alongside the nonprofit National Geographic Society, and every trip supports the Society's work in science, exploration, and conservation.
The brand reaches you through two trusted partners:
Land expeditions, with G Adventures. The Signature collection, Journeys and Family Journeys are operated together with G Adventures.
Expedition cruises, with Lindblad Expeditions. Ships such as National Geographic Resolution and National Geographic Explorer.
What's new in 2026
Signature joins G Adventures. As of January 2026, the luxury Signature collection is operated with G Adventures, alongside Journeys and Family Journeys.
Fresh family touches. Family Journeys now add Junior Explorers Nights for the kids and "Made Together Moments," hands-on activities parents and children create side by side, with most new departures arriving in 2027 and 2028.
What makes it different
Experts in the field. Signature trips are accompanied by National Geographic Expedition Experts: scientists, archaeologists, conservationists, and photographers. Lindblad voyages sail with naturalists and National Geographic photographers.
Genuinely small groups. Real conversations, not a lecture through a headset.
Access you could not arrange alone. Recent Signature itineraries feature visits to research facilities, including big cat research centers in Africa.
Choosing your style of expedition
Signature is where I begin for most luxury clients: five-star properties, concierge support and expert access, with itineraries spanning Southern Africa, Peru, Japan, Costa Rica, Morocco, Vietnam, Central Asia, and Palau.
Journeys suit curious adults who value immersion over polish: dining with a local family, an artisan's workshop, learning a regional recipe, in quality hotels with local character.
Family Journeys are designed for multigenerational groups, each traveling with two Expedition Leaders trained to engage young explorers.
Expedition cruises with Lindblad are the answer when the destination is best reached by water. Beyond the polar and wildlife classics, they reach Patagonia and even sail from Easter Island to Tahiti, a route especially dear to my French Polynesia heart.
Matching the trip to your family
Wildlife-forward trips such as Costa Rica, Tanzania, or South Africa tend to captivate younger children, while Peru and Vietnam reward kids old enough to love history and food. For couples and friends, Signature and Journeys offer the adult pace many travelers crave.
National Geographic or Adventures by Disney?
Both live under the Disney umbrella, both are favorites of mine, and families often ask me to choose between them. Their personalities differ.
Adventures by Disney is built around storytelling, service, and ease.
National Geographic Expeditions is built around discovery. The anchor of the trip is expertise: the scientist, the photographer, the field researcher. Days feel more active, and destinations reach further off the beaten path.
A simple way I frame it: if you want the world delivered with Disney magic, choose Adventures by Disney. If you want the world explained by the people who study it, choose National Geographic.
The questions worth asking
What do you most hope to see? The best expedition is often defined by timing, from the Galápagos to Antarctica.
How active do you want your days? Some involve hiking, altitude, or Zodiac landings, and I am certified in accessible travel for clients who need extra planning.
Who is traveling with you? A larger group of family or friends opens up options of its own.
Polish or immersion? Five-star comfort with expert access, or local homes and workshops, shapes the whole trip.
Leave the planning to me
Small groups fill quickly, so the sooner we talk, the more choice you'll have. I'll match you to the right expedition and look after every detail around it, and I am available around the clock while you travel.
